Debian: No sound

  • Quote

#1 Postby Leo-MathGuy »

I have Debian 11 with GNOME as my desktop manager. Since I installed debian on my laptop, there was no sound and was showing Dummy Output.
After searching online and placing

Code: Select all

blacklist sof-audio-pciblacklist snd_soc_skl

Into modprobe.d/blacklist.conf it selects hda-intel-pch, and the output is HDMI/Display Port. My laptop does not have an hdmi or displayport and there is no sound at all.
I also added

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=genericoptions snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0

Into alsa-base.conf in modprobe.d

There is no sound at all.
lspci -v:

Code: Select all

The first thing to try if the laptop is trying to use SOF is to check if the required firmware is installed.

viewtopic.php?t=153813

If it is and sound isn't working, you have two options: force the use of the legacy driver (see link) or update kernel & firmware.

Looks like this could be the es8336 issue:

https://lore.kernel.org/all/CAHrUA36ibs ... ail.com/T/

Install and run alsa-info to confirm (see first link).

My dmesg is basically the same as shown in the first link.
But nothing works Debian: No sound - Debian User Forums (3)
Still dummy output.
Though it detects

Code: Select all

0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH HDA Intel PCH at 0x9111c000 irq 128

In asound/cards

After doing what?

Did you install firmware?

Did you try the legacy driver?

Please post alsa-info output requested.

1. Firmware is already installed (firmware-sof-signed is already the newest version (1.7-1))
2. I already tried legacy driver (snd_hda_intel) -> Gives me dummy output
3. Blacklisting sof-audio-pci and writing

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=genericoptions snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0

In /etc/modprobe.d/ gives me HDMI / Display Port output (still nothing) - I dont have an hdmi / displayport. I do have a headphone jack but it doesn't work as well

4. I cannot run alsa-info. It keeps auto-updating and ends up just erasing the alsa-info.sh file

Thank you.

As card is detected with the legacy driver, we should work with that.

Force the legacy driver and remove other modprobe entries (for now) and please provide output of

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Faz

(install package if necessary).

Dummy output may be a result of specific machine details, so let's take a look at what you've got.

Should have noted earlier (probable cause of problem) that this is an acer chromebook cleared with chromeboot and installed Debian 11 on it. Model: CP-311-2H Spin

Yrs, that's a different kettle of fish, as they say.

Could be this issue:

https://github.com/thesofproject/sof/is ... 1055850761

Unconfirmed devices that also have sof-glkda7219max and are likely to be affected:

BOBBA (sof-glkda7219max & sof-glkrt5682max)

You will need to use the SOF driver for this one.

Possible fixes are:

Update the MrChromebox firmware: SOF fixes are added there.

Update to Debian 12: there are a lot of developments in SOF: driver, firmware, topology. Bookworm is frozen and should be fairly stable. There are still bugs, but the SOF project has come on a lot in two years, and some of the developments don't seem to be available in Bullseye. See:
