[Solved] Dummy Output - HP 16-k00023dx, Intel i7 12th gen, Cinnamon

Postby Warrick126 »

Hello,
I cannot get any sound to play in my laptop's speakers. In Sounds, I only see Dummy Output under the Output tab and nothing under Input tab. This is also true for pavucontrol. AlsaMixer detects Nvidia's HDMI audio, but nothing else. The speakers work fine in Windows 11, so it doesn't appear to be a hardware issue. Also, I get sound if I plug in a USB speaker, but not if I use the 3.5mm jack.

I have tried the suggestions in the Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues, as well as a few others in different posts here and across the internet. I even tried installing the drivers from the SOF project github (2.2 is currently installed). That said, I could have easily missed something.

Right now I'm running Mint 21.1 Vera, Cinnamon 5.6.5, Kernel 6.0.0-1009-oem. I've had this problem since October '22 when I got the laptop and have tried a couple of different kernels since then.

I'm not new to computers, but am new-ish to Linux. I am fine working with the Terminal, though.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Hello, and thank you. [Solved] Dummy Output - HP 16-k00023dx, Intel i7 12th gen, Cinnamon (6)

I removed "RG-UltLappy kernel" from the output since it was on every line and I thought removing it would make it a little easier to read. The three lines below caught my eye. Maybe I missed a step with the sof-project solution? I'll look into that.

Warrick126 wrote: Sat Jan 07, 2023 8:29 pm The three lines below caught my eye. Maybe I missed a step with the sof-project solution? I'll look into that.

Code: Select all

Jan 04 06:54:57: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: Direct firmware load for intel/sof-tplg/sof-adl-rt711-2ch.tplg failed with error -2Jan 04 06:54:57: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: error: tplg request firmware intel/sof-tplg/sof-adl-rt711-2ch.tplg failed err: -2Jan 04 06:54:57: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl 0000:00:1f.3: you may need to download the firmware from https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin/

Maybe you did or maybe those are just not available yet. In one case, I found a bug report related to an issue someone else had (different spec than yours) where the files were there, but not named properly (or something like that) which produced a err: -2 message. Or it could be the files are just not there. As the developers learn more about the quirks of each of these hardware setups, they add new files.

You will definitely need the missing files in order to get the sound card properly recognized. Without the card being recognized, there will be no sound.

The below lines caught my eye because I was not aware Linux Mint used soundwire yet. Was it specifically mentioned in the directions you used? While I believe it is the default for Ubuntu 22.10, it was not for Ubuntu 22.04/LM21. I am not familiar with it and am not able to help you with it. The -110 error is a timing out error.

With regards to the below, check the SOF repository to see if that specific topology file (sof-adl-rt711-2ch.tplg) is available. The last line, registering the card, is needed for sound.

I know the problem very well, costs some time...
I've installed yesterday newest SOF drivers, and I have a wrong topology.
By doing research, I jumped in this threat, and I'd suggest, you'll write an issue here, so that you'll get the missing file.
I just looked in my files for your card: sof-adl-rt711-2ch.tplg - have a look on my screenshot, there's no file:

Good luck,

This much I can say for sure: Soundwire was not mentioned in thesofproject instructions. I used the provided install.sh script, as well as manually doing what the script does. I'm not sure if soundwire is supposed to be there, or if the files came from one of my other attempts at a solution.

I checked the directory and, as expected, that tplg file is not there. I checked the download from github/thesofproject/sof-bin and that file isn't there either, so I guess it doesn't exist yet, like Nightwing said.
I'll open an issue with thesofproject, per Nightwing's suggestion. Thank you both!

Would this be considered resolved, at least as far as this forum is concerned?

It's your topic so you get to decide when the topic is solved.

The system will automatically lock the topic 6 months after the creation date so one idea of what you can do is edit the title of the first post now (click the pencil button) to add [Bug submitted - audio files missing] and then, if the files become available before the topic is automatically locked, you can add another post with the new information and edit the title of the first post to change the bug submitted text to [SOLVED].

That makes more sense, I'll do that.
I submitted the issue to The sof project github. Hopefully there will be a resolution soon, or at least the next step. https://github.com/thesofproject/linux/issues/4135

[Update] Apparently it's a quirk of HP BIOS, not really a missing file. The good news is the quirk has already been documented and a fix pushed, but it's only available in kernel 6.1. I'll see if I can update to that version.

You're a lucky man, and kernel 6.1 is up (and running), too: linux-oem-22.04c

As Nightwing has indicated, the 6.1-oem kernel just became available. I normally let them do an update or two before recommending them, but, if you want to give it a try, you can take a Timeshift snapshot (in case it does not work out) and then install it with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04c

and reboot.

Thanks! I have a bit of time tonight and can give it a try. At least I can see if sound works.

Update: So far the new kernel is running fine, but my speakers still didn't work. I looked in the log and saw the same missing file error. However, this time it was asking for a different file, sof-adl-rt711-l0-rt1316-l3-2ch.tplg. I searched my download from sof and found it. I copied it to the /lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg directory and rebooted. After that, the sound worked! I checked the headphone combo jack too and that worked. So, I think I'm good to go. Thank you both!

Thanks for this feedback. Perhaps there were changes made in the kernel (now a different version) which meant the file needed changed so they gave the new file a new ID. I will keep that in mind when helping others in the future.
